In the last eCatalyst, members were invited to attend a LWVMN Southeast Regional Fall Seminar at Northfield’s Senior Center on Saturday, November 16th. We have been notified by the State League of the cancellation of the Northfield event.
We have been invited to the Seminar being held on Saturday, November 23rd from 9-11:30 am in St. Paul in the Minnesota Women’s Building (where State League Offices are located) at 550 Rice Street. Registration to attend in person is $10, with on-line registration $5. If you have questions about registration, you are asked to contact Anika Walz at the State Office (651-224-5445; firstname.lastname@example.org).
The topic of the Fall Seminars: Learn how to make your local league sustainable and successful. There will also be a focus on how to restructure your local league to a 501(c)3, LLC and how to engage in the capital campaign.

As a follow-up to our Forum on the ABC’s of the Affordable Care Act, we are addressing the topic of the current status of MNSure at our next “What’s Up?” gathering. The event will take place on Monday, November 25th at 7 pm at The Hideaway in downtown Northfield.
We are pleased to announce that Jacob Grippen, MNSure Community Outreach Liaison, will be joining us, along with Jim Blaha, Executive Director of Northfield’s Community Action Center, and local insurance agent, Dale Ness.
We hope you’ll be able to join us for this informal presentation and discussion. Invite friends and neighbors to become informed about this important topic! We hope you’ve marked your calendars for these upcoming “What’s Up?” Monday events, as well: January 27th, February 24th, and March 24th.

League members are reminded of the upcoming Special Ward 4 Election.
Council candidates are Rick Esse, Scott Oney, and Jessica Peterson White. A bank of questions has been designed by a committee of League members and posed to the candidates. Their responses have been posted on Northfield.org.
The League's Candidate Forum is taking place on Monday, October 28th at 7 pm at the Senior Center - Room 103. Also note that The Contented Cow is hosting a Q & A with the candidates on Thursday, October 17th at 7 PM.
We are pleased to be able to encourage an informed citizenry through a combination of in-person and on-line formats.

On Thursday, April 12th, Dr. Edward Ehlinger, Commissioner of Health for Minnesota, will describe what the ACA means for Minnesotans at a Health Care Forum sponsored by the Northfield-Cannon Falls League of Women Voters. The public is invited to hear his talk, “Health Care Reform in Minnesota: The Realities and the Promise,” 7 p.m., at St. John’s Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Northfield.

The League of Women Voters (LWV) of Northfield & Cannon Falls invites the community to hear Sherri Knuth, Public Policy Coordinator and chief lobbyist for the League of Women Voters MN, explain the League’s opposition to this pending constitutional amendment.

Draw the Line Minnesota has announced the creation of a Minnesota Citizens Redistricting Commission that will be creating maps to share with Minnesota’s judicial redistricting panel. The Commission will be taking citizen input and testimony in locations across Minnesota during the month of August. Northfield is hosting the 2nd Congressional District’s hearing on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at 7 pm at the Northfield Senior Center (there will be a Spanish language interpreter present at the hearing). Citizens across the 2nd District are invited to participate as the 15-member multi-partisan and non-partisan group gathers input.

On Wednesday, May 4th, from 6:30-8 pm in the Bridgewater Elementary School Cafeteria, Speaker Deb Griffith, Assistant Executive Director for Schools for Equity in Education, will offer answers to this question and help clarify Minnesota's complex system of funding K-12 education.

Minnesota women on average are paid $11,000 dollars less each year than men with the same jobs. The gap exists in every occupation, including those dominated by women.
Debra Fitzpatrick, Program Director of the Center on Women and Public Policy at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute, will discuss this disparity at the annual meeting of the League of Women Voters of Northfield and Cannon Falls on Saturday, April 30. Refreshments will be served starting at 9:00 a.m., with the speaker beginning at 9:30. After a break, a brief business meeting will follow the speaker. The meeting will be held at the Northfield Senior Center, 1651 Jefferson Pkwy.
