The commissioners heard outside agency budget presentations from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation, the Rice County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Rice County Fair Board, and the Rice County Dispute Resolution Program. All had requests for funds, including Eduardo Wolle representing the Dispute Resolution Program asking for their first increase since 2001. Sheriff Cook spoke in favor of this group which is wanting to hire an additional part time staff person.
The Solid Waste Department discussed having a special Green Recycling Bin Return Day this fall when in exchange for returning the green 20 gallon bin, people would be able to dispose of either a television, monitor or appliance free for each bin. They also want to accept recyclables from two haulers in the Kenyon area and the southern portions of Scott and Dakota County.
A resolution was adopted in support of an economic development project between Met-Con, the developer, and an unnamed prospect.. If the prospect decides to locate in Met-Con’s development, a 75,000 square manufacturing facility will be built. However, this unnamed prospect is also looking at a location in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and will decide between the two locations by early October. Rice County has agreed to issues bonds for utility and road improvements.
An update on the Rice County Comprehensive Water Management Plan was postponed until the next meeting due to lack of time at this session.
