Northfield School Board - Feb. 25, 2008

Jan Mitchell, League Observer

The Northfield School Board met on Monday, February 25. 2008. Mike
Bertleson was absent. In addition to routine business, the Board
noted that John Bade, Middle School art teacher, is among 28
candidates for Teacher of the Year, sponsored by Education Minnesota.
Student in dramatics, wrestling, gymnastics, weight lifting, Mock
Trial, and the Middle School Spelling Bee earned distinctions in
competition. Nichole Nelson, a high school student, won a $2500 Toyota
award for her school inĀ  an essay contest. Students also generated
$5100 for research on leukemia and lymphoma through their Pennies for
Patients campaign.

The Board approved a change in the Intra District Transfer process.
Any student who has approval for attending an elementary school
outside their local residence area must apply for approval each
subsequent year. This is done to help reduce inequality of class
sizes. Students currently enrolled as transfer students are
“grandfathered in” to continue at that school. Requests for such
transfers were more frequent just after the district changed boundary
areas, but are declining.
