Northfield School Board - Monday, March 10,2008

 All members were present.

In addition to the routine business, the Board heard announcements and

recognitions including the student arts exhibit at NAG, the Science

Olympiad competiton, choir and orchestra performances, and boys diving

at the State level.

Deborah Appleman, from Carleton, reported on the visit a team made to

Prairie Creek Charter School to assess the school’s fiscal condition,

academic performance, and general climate. The report was very

favorable, and they recommend that the Northfield District extend

their sponsorship of  Prairie Creek School. They noted that

improvements might be made in training of Prairie Creek school board

members, and encouraged greater interactions, where appropriate, of

Northfield and Prairie Creek teachers. The school is planning to

expand its enrollment from 120 to 180, and the evaluation team urged

that they strive to maintain the intimacy and personal attention that

small schools can provide. The Northfield Board will decide about the

sponsorship issue in the next couple of months.

The Board approved the guidlines for intra-district transters. The

next meeting will be on April 14th at 7 p.m. in the High School Media

Center.

Respectfully submitted,

Jan Mitchell, LWV observer

Jan: thanks for all your work/time spent observing the school board. The question has come up how the decision was made to put the D.A.R.E. program in the schools. Can you shed some light on that subject?
Was the discussion for this round of D.A.R.E. based on an evaluation of its previous use in the schools? Was there any discussion about the controversy surrounding the effectiveness of the program?
These questions have been raised in the community, and I thought you might provide the best answers.
