LWVNCF Board Meeting – March 10, 2009

Present: Peterson, Haapala, Petri, Ness, Flom, Gervais, Moesler, Christian (Website Mgr.). Also present, Jane McWilliams, Kiffi Summa.

Peterson called meeting to order at 6:39 PM.

Minutes from January meeting approved.
Treasurer’s Report approved. No changes from previous month. Peterson has and will send to group.

Discussion:

Recent Successes:
Feb. 13, 2009 Elected Officials Party. Rousing success. Kudos to Walters and all who helped. Entire Northfield City Council, four Northfield School Board members and one Rice County Commissioners present, as well as Dundas City Council member and a Minnesota State Senator.

Upcoming Events:
March 14, 2009 Fun with Roberts Rules – will be in Holland Hall, St. Olaf College, room 307, 1 to 4 PM. Heather Robins will be on KYMN to plug event. Possibility of doing this event again in 2010.

March 28, 2009 Education Event with Diane Cirksena, Charlie Kyte. Location probably Northfield Senior Center. Walters will send info to Christian for website when details worked out.

April 30, 2009 ANNUAL MEETING. Peterson reported Pam Wheelock not available. Discussion of speakers/topics. Haapala will contact MN Supreme Court Chief Justice Eric Magnuson to check on his availability to talk about affect of budget cuts on MN Court System. Judge Wm. Johnson (Rice County District Court) back-up to contact if Magnuson not available.

Discussion of whether By-Law changes from 2008 Annual Meeting valid due to lack of quorum at meeting. Christian had two by-law change proposals (one to exclude newsletter editor from Board Officers. Also exclude membership chair from Board Officer list.
Both last years and this year’s proposed By-Law changes will be mailed to membership this year due to lack of quorum at last years annual meeting.

Nominating Committee still gathering slate for Annual Meeting.

Health Care Reform Event in October 2009.
Gervais reported on plans for event to be held October 16-19, 2009. Speaker re: public engagement in health care Friday evening followed by Saturday dialogue (40 people), and Sunday event for faith communities.

Citizens Boards and Commissions. McWilliams and Summa discussed issue of citizen engagement in Northfield Boards and Commissions as raised by a subcommittee of the Northfield City Council. They requested support from LWV Board to investigate current status/changes. Motion (Haapala, 2nd (Flom) to have McWilliams and Summa investigate status of citizen boards and commissions in Northfield. Motion approved. McWilliams and Summa will report back to board on this.
