Observer Report: Rice County Commissioners, 8.6.24

Rice County Commissioners – August 6, 2024 

Present: Purfeerst, Docken, Hoisington, Malacha, Underdahl 

Outside Agency: 

  1. Rice County Agricultural Society: Rice County Fair did well this year, with increased vendors, exhibits, entertainment, w/out incident. Financials not yet available. Reviewed maintenance done this year. Will request 20,000 again this year, for repair and upkeep buildings, water lines, electrical systems of the fairgrounds.  Equipment needs to be replaced, as well.  
  1. Hope Center: Strong collaborative effort in the community and county. Over 1,000 clients seen per year, over 1,100 calls per year, over 4,000 volunteer hours per year.  Asks for continued support of the center.  
  1. Faribault Cradle 2 Career: Community wide initiative with first focus on kindergarten readiness, second is third grade reading level by third grade. Third benchmark is math readiness by 8 th grade. Fourth benchmark focuses on graduation, college and/or career. Working with HCI, mentioning success in Northfield and a similar program in Rochester. Requesting financial assistance from the county.  
  1. Rice County Historical Society:  Several new programs over the past year, reaching out into the county, working closely with the schools, in Northfield, Faribault, Morristown. Staff of two with many volunteers. Requesting slight increase in funds from county this year, maintenance.  
  1. Southern Minnesotan Tourism Association: no one here for presentation 
  1. Prairie’s Edge Humane Society: Money from the county tends to go to veterinary care. Things are stable over the past year, although seeing an increase in cats, which is a problem (feral cats).
