Did you know…?

  • Any voter can request an absentee ballot without an excuse. You can apply for an absentee ballot online at:  https://mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us/ABRegistration/ABRegistrationStep1.aspx
  • You will need either your MN Driver’s License number or your SSN for the request, and you must use the same number to identify yourself on the ballot envelope.
  • Absentee ballots will be mailed to voters starting September 18.
    • Check the instructions about sealing and signing the envelopes.
    • If you are already registered to vote, you do not need a witness.

  • Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked before or on November 3 (Election Day). They must be received by November 10. Ballots received after that will not be counted. To be sure of meeting the deadline, send your mail-in ballot as soon as possible. It may travel faster if you put a first-class stamp on the pre-paid return envelope.
  • Absentee ballots can be returned in person BEFORE Election Day.
    • You can return your ballot in person to Northfield City Hall during their business hours:
      • Monday – Friday; 8 am – 4:30 pm. (Must arrive by 4:15 pm.)
      • Saturday, August 8 – 10 am – 3 pm (must arrive by 2:45 pm)
      • Monday, August 10 – open until 5 pm (must arrive by 4:45 pm)
      • Saturday, October 31 – 10 am – 3 pm (must arrive by 2:45 pm)
      • Monday, November 2 – open until 5 pm (must arrive by 4:45 pm)
  • RICE COUNTY: You may also return your ballot in person no later than 3 p.m. ON Election Day. Take it to the Rice County Government Services Building, 320 3rd St NW, Faribault MN 55021. There is a secure drop box near the building’s south entrance.

  • DAKOTA COUNTY: You may also return your ballot in person no later than 3 p.m. ON Election Day. Take it to the Dakota County Elections Office at 1590 Highway 55, Hastings, MN 55033-2343.

  • You may not drop off your ballot at your polling place.
  • You can track your ballot at: https://mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us/AbsenteeBallotStatus.aspx

  • If your absentee ballot has not been received on Election Day, you can still go vote in person.
